Clarence Avant is an American music executive, entrepreneur, and film producer, who is sometimes known as the “Godfather of Black Music”. Avant launched Sussex Records in December 1969. He had previously set up another mainly black music label, Venture Records for MGM.

Born Clarence Alexander Avant on February 25, 1931 in Greensboro, North Carolina, he was the oldest of eight children. Avant attended a one-room school in Greensboro until the 9th grade, and spent his freshman and second years of high school at Dudley High School in Greensboro before moving to New Jersey in 1947 as a teenager.
